MY PHILOSOPHY

Effective communications strategies -- shaped by the communities we served and the staff who execute them -- have never been so important for nonprofit organizations as they are today. Institutional storytelling is just as important as campaigns that promote our programs, but only if we understand where we are, who we're talking to, and why. Community building, transparency, and commitment to equity must not be buzzwords, but embraced in every aspect of what we do.

I firmly believe that organizations must be open to every communications tool available to them. Multi-channel marketing is nothing new, but without realistic goals, emotionally intelligent messaging, accurate data, or regard to staff capacity, are doomed to fail. Every choice we make is a compromise, taking away resources from somewhere else. As such, I take a pragmatic, balanced approach that is shaped by the needs of each organization and the communities they serve.

ABOUT ME

Though originally hailing from the American Midwest, the majority of my 11 years of communications experience has been put to work in New Orleans, Louisiana, which I am proud to call home with my wife Seymone.

A true melting pot of diverse cultures and complicated histories, New Orleans is both a muse and a challenge for communicators, providing infinite creative and social inspiration. At the same time, the scourges of economic inequity, institutional racism, and climate change represent, in microcosm, the major problems faced by our troubled nation as a whole.

Personally, I am a victim of having too many hobbies: a musical omnivore, I enjoy playing trumpet with a few local jazz and classical ensembles, especially during Mardi Gras season. When I have the time, I enjoy improving my cocktail mixology skills and pursuing my life-long love of aviation by working towards earning a private pilot license.
